Your Health Questions Answered

In our Ask the Experts ongoing series, we reached out to Dr. Nazarian who is a primary care physician in Beverly Hills who practices internal medicine and primary care. The office is recognized as one of the top medical practices in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Is COVID gone?

Covid 19 cases and hospital admissions due to covid have dropped significantly over the last year and recently the U.S. public health emergency declaration due to covid was ended. This, however, does not mean Covid 19 has completely gone away.

What’s the story on Diabetes medicine as weight loss?

There is a class of drugs called GLP-1 agonists or glucagon like peptide 1 receptor agonists that have gained popularity this year. These medications help curb hunger and slow the movement of food from the stomach into the stomach. As a result, people are less hungry and fuller faster. They are an effective tool in weight loss when properly administered by a physician. Our practice has been using these injections successfully with nutrition modifications to help patients lose weight. It is important to note that these medications are not for everyone, and one should have a consultation with a physician who is familiar with these meds to make sure there are no contraindication to use and proper follow up is provided. Patients who have a family history of thyroid cancer should not be using these medications. We are seeing patients who are prescribed these medications without the proper workup and follow up and having muscle loss due to lack of protein intake and proper follow up in our practice.

How big a part do you think nutrition plays in health and healing?

Nutrition plays a crucial role in both overall health and our bodies ability to heal itself. Poor nutrition can lead to weight gain and a variety of conditions that are associated with it. Proper nutrition intake provides our bodies with the proper amount of vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrate and fatty acids to function. Certain nutrients, such as vitamin C, zinc, and protein, are particularly important for wound healing. Protein is necessary for the production of new cells and muscle growth and maintenance. Vitamin C and zinc support collagen synthesis, which is crucial for tissue repair.

What are your thoughts on the American healthcare system?

This is a complicated question with many factors involved. It is unfortunate to see that healthcare costs continue to go up and the only real winners are the insurance companies. Many people have seen their insurance premiums increase over the last several years while their benefits have been reduced. At the same time, physician reimbursements have gone done and profits at the insurance companies have gone up. Many physicians are leaving the networks as a result as they are not being reimbursed for the services they are providing.

Why are drugs more expensive here than in other countries?

Medications such as insulin, epinephrine, hepatitis C medications and cancer medications are more expensive in the U.S. than other countries.

What is your health routine?

I try to exercise regularly and lift weights at least 4 times a week. In addition, I try to have a balanced diet and get enough sleep at night. I don’t function as well when I am not exercising or getting enough sleep.

What is a concierge doctor?

A concierge doctor is a type of healthcare provider that offers a more personalized and comprehensive medical care to a limited number of patients. Concierge medical practices operate on a membership or retainer-based model where patients pay an annual fee to be part of the practice. In exchange they receive more time and access to their physician. Prevention and wellness is a big part of our concierge practice. Patients who are members of our practice receive a yearly executive physical exam that is included in their care in addition to same day appointments and access to myself and my team. We coordinate all aspects of their health and work closely with top specialists to ensure they receive the best care possible.

When Hollywood Ran Scared

When Hollywood Ran Scared

Explore the history and impact of the Hollywood Red Scare and its contemporary implications for civil liberties, propaganda, and shifting definitions of American patriotism.

In October 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee called on Hollywood figures to testify about allegations of Communist propaganda in American films. Although the committee never found evidence of this, the film industry responded by becoming the first mass employer to adopt a blacklist against employees whose political beliefs ran counter to prevailing ideals.

Making its West Coast debut at the Skirball Cultural Center with newly added artifacts, Blacklist: The Hollywood Red Scare shines a spotlight on the proceedings, investigations, motives, and choices of those caught in the crosshairs—including the many Jewish creatives and executives who suffered under and enforced the blacklist.

The result is an emotionally complex and compelling exhibition that demonstrates how the politics of Hollywood can shape the entire country.

Now on view till September 3, 2023

Blacklist: The Hollywood Red Scare is an original exhibition created by and on loan from the Jewish Museum Milwaukee.

Buchanan’s Scotch Whiskey Launches New Buchanan’s Pineapple

Buchanan’s Scotch Whiskey Launches New Buchanan’s Pineapple

Buchanan’s Scotch Whiskey just got a bit more sophisticated, bringing on a favorite from the very best of the tropics. If you’re looking for smooth liquid warmth in light of our recent rainy cold spell, you may have just met your match. We’ve even included a couple of recipes for you!

On February 7, Buchanan’s Blended Scotch Whiskey launched Buchanan’s Pineapple  – the first offering from the House of Buchanan’s to feature the signature smoothness of Scotch Whisky with the vibrant taste of pineapple. Inspired by the delicious flavors of the brand’s signature Buchanita recipe, Buchanan’s Pineapple features a hint of zesty citrus perfectly paired with the light caramel and vanilla notes, finished with lingering, bright tropical flavors.

Buchanan’s Pineapple Bottle and Packaging

This new release is perfect for elevating the drinking experience at home or while out, with Buchanan’s Pineapple proving versatile in a number of recipes and styles. It’s delicious served as a shot glass with Chamoy and chili-lime seasoning, and mixes perfectly in cocktails like the Bucha Colada (Buchanan’s own take on the popular piña colada, but with whisky).

“For years, Buchanan’s has been welcomed into the culture and celebrations of Hispanics, often times mixed with pineapple juice, resulting in one of our most popular serves – the Buchanita, which helped inspire us in the creation of this new drink,” says Joyce He, Director Buchanan’s Whisky. “With this new offering, we’re combining one of the most beloved flavors amongst Hispanics, piña, and combining it with the same distinctive profile of Buchanan’s that fans have known and loved for more than 130 years.”

Buchanan’s Pineapple At Spotifys Best New Artist Party

A permanent addition to the Buchanan’s portfolio, Buchanan’s Pineapple (750ml; 35% ABV) is available for purchase online and in retail stores nationwide, wherever fine spirits are sold (as of February 1, 2023), with a suggested retail price of $29.99. Buchanan’s Pineapple is welcoming drinkers 21 and older to step into a tangier timezone and a more vibrant world of flavor with new campaign It’s Piña. The campaign celebrates a tropical state of mind, an energy, and a magic moment that happens the instant you share a piña drink with friends and family. The integrated campaign will launch with digital content in social and paid media, featuring original music by Venezuelan -Dominican producer Napoles, who added his 200% flavor to the campaign.

In addition, Buchanan’s kicked off their “It’s Piña” programming alongside Grammy Award nominee, singer/songwriter, and pop culture heartthrob Omar Apollo, with digital advertising content in paid digital and social media, cocktail recipes and live events!

Earlier this month, Apollo celebrated his Best New Artist nomination at the Spotify Best New Artist Party in Los Angeles, with Buchanan’s Whisky. He and invited guests of the annual event were among the first to experience the flavor of the new Buchanan’s Pineapple in delicious cocktails, setting a tropical vibe for intimate performances by Apollo and other nominees, such as Anitta, Tobe Nwigwe and more.

Grammy Nominee Omar Apollo at the Spotify Best New Artist Party in Los Angeles.

The curated guest list brought together the who’s who in the music industry with artists like Diplo, Jessie Reyez, A$AP Ferg, Sofia Reyes in attendance.

Buchanan’s is encouraging fans to responsibly embrace the piña mindset at home, or out with friends, through easy-to-make cocktails and recipes, like the Piña Fizz and Bucha Colada. Buchanan’s Pineapple will also be bringing piña vibes on the road throughout the year at some of the biggest cultural events, local parades and community gatherings across New York, California, Florida, Texas, Illinois, and beyond. Quintessential LA Experience

Quintessential LA Experience

Suddenly being back in the Arts District after a two year hiatus, as Bob Dylan once said, “Things have changed”.  Retail store, Warby Parker is gone. Hammer and Spear, gone. The Pie Hole will be closing September 17th. It’s an area hard hit by the pandemic. When the invitation to visit the Mulholland Room Hideaway arrived—we dashed. Located on the 2nd floor of the building that houses the Pali Wine Co., a building that feels like something about of a Raymond Chandler novel, the 2nd floor entrance is simply a small note on a door. The Mulholland Room Hideway was founded by actor Walton Goggins and cinematic cameraman Matthew Alper, the location has been described as a “love letter to LA.” The occasion? To sip their distilled Gin, Vodka and Whiskey, called, yes, Mulholland. This was a unique Los Angeles event; the name alone for those that know their LA history is that William Mulholland, a civil engineer that imported water into Los Angeles in the early 1900s. Mulholland Drive is a 21 mile excursion on the crest of a mountain that goes from Hollywood to to the ocean. It ihas been the subject of many a film, and it is home to many celebrities. It is distinctly a Los Angeles  road that separates the valley from Los Angeles with beautiful vistas of the Hollywood Sign, downtown and the San Fernando Valley. But tonight, we are here to sip and drink, have conversations and watch the slow descent of the summer sun on downtown Los Angeles. And while a PR event, here is the good news—everyone involved turns out to be beautiful, kind and appreciative. And here’s the even better news—the booze is great!

“At Mulholland, our mission is to create artisanal spirits that reflect and celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of our great city. We’ve traveled the entire country in search of the finest spirits available. We are working with master distillers to bring those spirits here for all to enjoy. This is our Spirit of Los Angeles™. You can find our 100 proof American Whiskey, our 96 proof New World Gin and 86 proof 100% Corn Vodka throughout California.”

How to Keep Your Skin Healthy

Taking vitamins and nutrients can keep your skin looking beautiful. You probably have multiple steps to your skincare routine, so why not add one more? Incorporate these essential vitamins and nutrients into your daily regime.

7 Most Important Vitamins and Nutrients for Healthy Skin

Having healthy skin makes you look and feel good. Washing your face regularly is one way to maintain clear skin, but vitamins are also useful. Here are 7 essential vitamins and nutrients to add to your skincare routine.

  1. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is produced when your skin absorbs sunlight. That’s why it’s important to get outside at least once a day. Vitamin D can help with skin cell growth and repair and improve your metabolism. It can increase your skin’s immune system and reduce inflammation.

There are products containing this vitamin that help with psoriasis. To get Vitamin D naturally, eat foods containing this vitamin, such as salmon or tuna fish. Try to get at least 600 IU’s of Vitamin D daily.

  1. Vitamin C

This vitamin is found in the outer and inner layers of your skin. It produces collagen which plays a role in skin elasticity. Vitamin C also decreases cell damage, heals wounds, and prevents wrinkles.

Plus, it can lighten your skin and make it appear more radiant. To get Vitamin C you can find over-the-counter products and dietary supplements. Another idea is eating citrus or plant-based foods, such as oranges or strawberries.

  1. Vitamin E

This antioxidant helps to protect against sun damage by absorbing harmful UV light. This then prevents dark spots and wrinkles. Vitamin E is produced through an oily substance emitted by your skin’s pores. This substance keeps your skin conditioned reducing dryness. You want to get at least 15 mg a day of Vitamin E.

You can do this by taking supplements or using a topical cream. If you take any medications, talk doctor about drug interactions. For example, Vitamin E may interfere with some cholesterol-lowering medications.

  1. Vitamin K

Vitamin K helps aid in the process of blood clotting. They can also help with certain skin conditions, such as stretch marks, spider veins or dark spots. This vitamin can be found in multiple topical creams, including Aroma Naturals products. Doctors use these creams for people undergoing surgery to reduce swelling and bruising. Along with medication, you can eat foods rich in Vitamin K, like kale or spinach.

  1. Protein

The protein you eat turns into amino acids which are the building blocks for your cells. They’re also used to make important proteins, such as collagen, which form the structure of your skin. Some amino acids protect your skin against UV rays or heal and repair damaged tissue.

To get more protein, consider eating more meat, such as beef or chicken. You can also make simple swaps such as eggs or yogurt for cereal. Another tip is to include a source of protein with every meal.

Here is some food containing protein to add to your plate:

  • Lean meats
  • Fish
  • Seeds and nuts
  • Dairy
  • Beans and lentils
  1. Vitamin A

Vitamin A prevents sun damage by interrupting the process of collagen breakdown. It may also protect you from sunburn, help your oil glands, and heal scrapes and cuts. The recommended daily intake of Vitamin A is 900 mcg RAE for men and 700 mcg RAE for women. To increase your daily intake, take supplements or eat leafy green vegetables.

  1. Calcium

Calcium can strengthen your bones and prevent serious injury. It can even rejuvenate your skin, by regulating cell turnover. Calcium improves your skin’s barrier by keeping out pathogens and locking in moisture. So, if you have dry skin, this nutrient is beneficial.

You need at least 1,000 mg of calcium per day. One easy way to obtain this goal is by drinking milk. You can also eat other dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt. Another idea is taking dietary supplements, like calcium carbonate or calcium citrate. Keep in mind calcium carbonate should be taken with food.

History of Venice Beach House

Venice Beach House was created by newspaperman Warren Wilson in 1911. Wilson was friends with Abbot Kinney, known for creating the Venice of America with its own canals, and Venice Beach House quickly became one of the area’s most iconic buildings. Perched on white sand dunes overlooking the Pacific, this Craftsman landmark was listed by the U.S. Park Service in the National Register of Historic Places. It has always been filled with families like the Kinney family, who shared the grounds as Kinney’s sons married Wilson’s daughters.

A hub of social life, the Venice Beach House has always welcomed the biggest celebrities of the time, from Charlie Chaplin on “retreat,” to the very end of the run from Athens to LA of the Olympic Torch Relay. Through all the years, the Beach House has remained a quiet constant in a Venice that attracted beatniks, then hippies, and then tourists from all over the world. A hidden oasis, faithfully restored by the Boesch family and maintained as a bed and breakfast for travelers and, for all of Venice, the Venice Beach House remains a throwback to an era gone by, a mysterious gem in a city where discovery and tranquility are hard to come by.

It’s in the Stars!

It’s in the Stars!

We turned our attention to the heavens and local astrologer Rachel Lang to answer some of our urgent questions about astrology. If you have questions that you would like answered—let us know!
Should I believe the astrology pages in magazines?
Astrology is so much more than your sun sign. Sun sign columns just consider one aspect of astrology. So, it’s more accurate to receive a reading from a professional or even to read your customized astrological transits from a site like astro.com or an app like Time Passages. That said, I know excellent astrologers who write horoscopes for magazines and websites. If you’re looking for guidance, astrology columns can be a source of inspiration.

What’s a rising sign?
Your rising sign is the eastern horizon at the time of your birth, and it represents your first impression. It’s the face you show the world. It’s a significant factor in determining the way you look and your personality. It also represents how you interact with the world around you.

What’s this Mercury-in-retrograde we keep hearing about?
It’s actually Mercury retrograde (no in)! 3-4 times a year, Mercury gives us the appearance of going backward in the heavens. It’s similar to the optical illusion you see when a car is driving right next to you at approximately the same speed. Mercury is the planet of communication, our thinking patterns, and transportation. When Mercury goes retrograde, we have a chance to reflect on how we communicate as well as what we’re holding back that needs to be said. It’s a more introspective time. So, sometimes, we do deep personal reflection and have insights about our lives. It is always a good idea to back up computers and communication devices. Also, if you have delays, be patient! Mercury is a trickster and lets us know if we’re taking things too seriously.

Is astrology a science?
Astrology is similar to psychology in that our knowledge of astrology is based on observation and case studies over thousands of years. We can watch cycles repeat themselves over and over, and each time a cycle retreats itself, we see similar themes playing out in our lives and in the world. It works with archetypes and symbols, and astrologers interpret these symbols to gain context for what’s happening here on earth. It maps out the skies for any moment in time, like your time of birth. So, many of my astrological colleagues know astronomy and math.

Yes, the proof is in the pudding. No matter how old you are and what your skin type is, you should still be moisturizing every day. In terms of anti-aging techniques, this holds true especially for those with dry and combination skin, as moisturizing can prevent wrinkles and protect the skin against damage.

Use an SPF

Many people will tell you that protecting your skin against the sun is one of the best ways to prevent rapid aging and skin damage, and those people would be right. Preventative, proactive maintenance tends to be more effective than reactive care. The sun can cause wrinkles and sun spots, and the sooner you start using an SPF, the more likely you’ll be to prevent those changes. Make sure you use a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher for the very best protection.

Take Vitamins

Vitamins and minerals, in addition to a balanced diet, can grant your skin the elasticity and resilience it needs to age slowly and gracefully. Multivitamins and collagen supplements can often do the trick, in addition to amino acids, magnesium, iron and biotin, which you can supplement at your own discretion.

Stay Hydrated

You can never go wrong with drinking enough water every day, and staying hydrated is one of the best tips for skin health and longevity. It can help provide healthy skin resilience and protection, especially if you make it a habit.

Quit Smoking

While this one can be tough for people, smoking can have detrimental effects on the skin over time. Not only can smoking cause sagging, age spots and wrinkles, but it can also impact your overall health. While quitting can certainly be hard, it’s worth it to cut back or try to quit, both for your outer beauty and your internal health.

Use a Retinol

Retinol treatments are sometimes considered to be a magical fix for all sorts of skin concerns. Essentially, retinol helps skin cells regenerate themselves and heal properly from damage. In a sense, it’s a kind of exfoliator. This helps both skin clarity and helps to prevent aging, giving you the best of both worlds. Just make sure that you use your retinol at night and keep up with your sun protection routine, as retinol can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Reduce Stress

Stress can cause the skin to age, just like other — arguably, more important — parts of the body. Too much stress can cause lines, wrinkles and other, more immediate problems like rashes, breakouts, acne scarring, bumps and other imperfections. Overall, if you’re looking to relax your skin, it can help to relax your life. While it isn’t always possible to zap all of your stress away, trying to reduce stress in little ways as much as possible can help reduce visible signs of aging.

Use a Chemical Exfoliator

We already talked about this a bit with the retinol, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Chemical exfoliators are far superior to their physical exfoliator counterparts. Not only are they gentler on the skin, but they also go deeper and help skin cell regeneration. Retinol, glycolic acid, AHA and BHA are all examples of chemical exfoliators.

Making Sure Your Skin Ages Well

Taking care of your skin has never been more popular, and for a good reason! The health of your face is a part of your overall health, and it’s never too late to start looking at longevity. Whether you’re opting for vitamins or a chemical exfoliator, you can take care of your skin and keep the wrinkles and creases away.
