LAGUNA BEACH, CA —The Festival of Arts held its 10th annual Festival Runway Fashion Show on August 19 and artists wowed audiences with their creativity and talent constructing outfits from reclaimed, reused or recycled materials. A panel of five judges chose the top looks in four categories and over 2,000 Festival visitors had the opportunity to cast their votes for “People’s Choice Award.”
The Festival Runway Fashion Show was hosted by actress KTTV FOX11’s Entertainment Reporter Amanda Salas. Selecting the winners were Radar Online Entertainment Editor Alexis Tereszcuk, OK! Magazine Associate Publisher Shelley Fariello, LACMA Curator of Costumes and Textiles Kaye Spilker, costume designer Alex Jaeger and film production designer Nelson Coates.
“Most Exciting Ensemble with Wow Factor” was awarded to mixed media artist Carolyn Johnson who was accompanied down the runway by her dog Dexter, also clothed in recycled materials for the occasion. The outfit featured a large parasol and was made up of a variety of materials including volleyball net, CDs, packing materials, Perrier bottles, PVC piping and cardboard.
Painter Kirsten Whalen won “Most Innovative Use of Materials” for her light versus dark ensemble featuring window screens, old light bulbs, wires, cords, sockets, plugs and other fittings that were discarded by local electricians. The shape and look of the dress were inspired by designers Alexander McQueen and Colleen Atwood as well as the tv series Game of Thrones.
Artist Kate Cohen won “Most Creative Concept” with her dress crafted from over sixty designer shopping bags. Each bag’s logo was meticulously placed to cascade over one another and the look was finished with a bodice, necklace and earrings made from pink tissue paper and bag handles.
Adam Neeley received the award “Most Glamorous & Elegant ‘Red Carpet’ Worthy Creation” for his stylish outfit made from more than three hundred cans of La Croix water. Titled Acqua, Adam crafted thousands of bubble shaped domes using his jewelry-making tools and attached them one by one in a swirling array of colors. Adam’s runway look also impressed the crowd and took home the highly coveted “People’s Choice Award.”
