If there’s something to be said about Christian Cowan, it’s that he’s as innovative as he is fun. We’re talking about a designer who’s dressed the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, and so many more, marking him as a prominent creative in the fashion industry. Amidst his well-deserved success, Cowan chose to celebrate women on International Women’s Day with a thoroughly captivating runway experience in Downtown L.A. at the City Market Social House showcasing his “Powerpuff Girls” inspired capsule collection.
The partnership came directly from Cartoon Network, the very network that first aired “The Powerpuff Girls” in 1998. In a continued celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary, Cartoon Network saw it fit to align itself with Christian Cowan to develop a collection that not only celebrates a pop culture phenomenon like “The Powerpuff Girls,” but also furthers the notion that women and girls can be powerful at any age.
“The Powerpuff Girls have always been part of a broader pop cultural celebration around ‘girl power,’ said Jill King SVP, Marketing and Partnerships, Cartoon Network and Boomerang. “Christian’s take on the many complex aspects of femininity, along with his originality and fearlessness as a creator, makes this a perfect collaboration to bring the message of empowering girls and women of all ages to life.”
The collaboration between Cowan and The Powerpuff Girls will also benefit and support She’s the First (STF), as a means to further promote the nonprofit’s mission to fight gender inequality through education. STF believes that a girl with an education is unstoppable!
“I am thrilled to be partnering with such an iconic brand whose message is about supporting one another and kicking butt no matter your age, size or gender,” says Cowan. “I grew up watching The Powerpuff Girls, and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to create a collection inspired by characters that advocate for sisterhood and positivity.”
SoCal Mag was all for the nostalgia and appreciated Cowan’s attention to detail through design from the show’s inspiration. Hues of the iconic blue, green, and pink donned by the Powerpuff Girls’ uniform were seen throughout the collection with additional nods to other notable characters from the show like Miss Sara Bellum and the Girls’ arch nemesis, Mojo Jojo.
Celebrities in attendance included: Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum, Erika Jayne, Tinashe, Amanda Steele, Kollin Carter, Carly Rae Jepsen, Monique Coleman, Betty Who, Skai Jackson, Kim Petras, Draya Michelle, Shaun Ross, Julissa Bermudez, Francia Raisa, EJ King, Gia Gunn, Max Emerson, Marta Pozzan, Megan Pormer, Patrick Starrr, Christa Allen, Madison Grace, Niia Bertino, Ginta Bertino, Nikita Dragun, Jazzmyne Roberts, Khrystyana Kazakova, and Lindsay Webster.

There is a reason why Spice Affair in Beverly Hills dons its name, and that’s because this fine Indian restaurant has cleverly paired the most traditional Indian dishes & spices with some of the finest renditions of California cuisine. It’s no wonder why Spice Affair is an award winning business and holds the title of “Best Indian Food in Los Angeles”.
I partook in a divine dinner experience at Spice Affair and knew that this restaurant really had something competitive to offer in its Beverly Hills dining neighborhood. For starters, their famed “Butter Chicken Loaded with Love” stands up to its name as one of the most ordered items on the menu. The Dum Chicken Biryani is another highly recommended favorite which served to be a delicious medley of Basmati rice, with boneless chicken, and Saffron. I was blown away by all of the flavors throughout each dish. Quite frankly, Spice Affair, created a dining experience that expanded my personal palate and opened my mind to a new world of food options.
Even more impressive were the numerous options for Vegan and Gluten Free items on the menu. My guest that evening lives by a dominantly plant-based diet, so it was great that they were able to comfortably order from the menu without having to feel limited with items to choose from and still enjoy some of the best options from the restaurant.
I highly recommend eating “family style” here because you’re going to want to try a little bit of everything. It makes the dining experience so much better and allows for a completely satisfactory meal with layers of flavor and Spice!
Spice Affair Indian Restaurant is located at 50 N La Cienega Blvd. #120, Beverly Hills, CA 90211
Lunch is served Mon – Sun from 11:30am – 2:30pm
Dinner is served Sun – Thurs from 5:00pm – 10:00pm and Fri & Sat from 5:00pm – 11:00pm
MADE IN + BY + FOR LA
Streetwear as a whole resonates so easily with the city of Los Angeles, so much that it’s a staple part of L.A. culture. Streetwear loves L.A., and L.A. loves streetwear, so it’s no mystery as to why this city is a booming hub of creative brands and designers tapping into the category that has skyrocketed to mainstream fashion. Los Angeles is saturated with streetwear brands, but few create with the position of a reaching out to a greater cause. The young founders of WHERE thought about what it means to be a streetwear brand and really wanted to reflect a celebration of this amazing city through their clothing. They even took it further to expand the brand’s platform in a positive direction by partnering with the Time’s Up Organization and Legal Fund to combat sexual assault and inequality. See what WHERE’s co-founders, Natasha Hunt Lee & Tyler Makhani, have to say about their brand and the overall message they want to deliver.
What separates WHERE Clothing from other streetwear brands?
Something that we always notice with other streetwear brands is this nonchalant sense of coolness. You can see it in the model’s expressions and body language. Then, you add the intimidating nature of both influence and luxury and these brands are almost so ‘cool’ that they’re untouchable. We want to redefine that. We want to align “cool” with excitement and warmth and the sincerity that comes with those feelings. When we take photos, we make sure most of them are candid. We want everyone smiling.
The Times Up movement is making some serious waves in today’s social climate. What compelled you to contribute to this initiative via your clothing brand?
This is important to us for so many reasons. The work that the Time’s Up Organization and Legal Fund is doing to end sexual assault, harassment and inequality is imperative. Their platform is massive, and it’s so important to support their ability to fund legal representation for the victims of these crimes.
Natasha: As a woman, specifically in the entertainment business, I am appalled by the way various powerful figures have taken advantage of their position by asserting themselves over so many, a majority being (but not limited to) women. In addition, there is a discrepancy in women’s pay, authority in the work place and our opportunities, benefits and representation. As a woman who has been given the privilege of an education, I think it’s only right to use my own, smaller platform to promote causes like Time’s Up. I am excited by and grateful for their work towards creating a safer and more honorable community.
What message do you want WHERE Clothing to give its fans?
Celebration. We want ours to transfer. We love what these clothes represent, and we want our customers to join us in celebrating when they buy something— whether it be Los Angeles artisanship, a special graphic, or the Time’s Up Legal Fund.
What can we expect from the brand in future collections?
This is just the beginning for us and we can’t wait to keep going. We will continue to perfect our fit and feel while bringing new ideas and inspirations to the table. We have so many designs ready and we’re so excited to share— from more creative capsules like REPOSE, to new city specific collections like our New York Series set to launch next year. Additionally, we are working on some collaborations and partnerships with other brands that uphold similar values and aesthetics. With every collection, we learn so much. It’s so fun for us to take that knowledge and invest it into our future.

For National Men’s Grooming Day, it was important to me that I find a grooming service worthy of publication. It had to be memorable, it had to be satisfying, it had to be “Golden”. I also threw in a convenience factor as I wanted to be sure it was in the San Fernando Valley being that I reside in North Hollywood. Thankfully, I didn’t have to travel too far as I was directed over to GoldenHour in Sherman Oaks. Owned and operated by young entrepreneur, Jalon Webster, GoldenHour takes pride in being the Valley’s best men’s grooming experience available because they hold themselves up to the highest standards in town.
The vibe of GoldenHour is established as soon as you walk into the shop from the minimalist design with street art accents along with a music playlist that sets the mood to unwind. Jalon says, “We like to take you away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world and bring you to a place of serenity within the shop. We utilize curated playlists to set the tone with music. Then pairing our full service haircuts with our men’s manicures, pedicures, or facials allows for an experience that is truly ‘Golden’. I believe you have to give to yourself before you can give to others. The more you give to yourself, the more you can give to others.“
I received a fresh haircut from Jalon himself and a professional manicure from the on-site aesthetician and nail tech. The signature haircut also called “The Golden Hour” takes a complete 60 minutes because Jalon focuses on precision and giving his clients the best treatment available. He attributes his skill to the time he’s spent cutting hair altogether. “I’ve been cutting hair for over 14 years, which is more than half of my life. I love what I do and I love interacting with people. There’s something very therapeutic about getting a great haircut, and I want to stick to the old school idea that I’m not just your barber, but I’m also a type of therapist when you’re in my chair.“
It’s no wonder why GoldenHour has been able to establish itself as prime location for male grooming. Their services have garnered a celebrity clientele that includes the likes of Sarunas Jackson, Shannon Sharpe, Andre Berto, Donovan Carter, Omar Bolden, Duke Ihenacho, and more.
The flagship Sherman Oaks location opened in March 2018, but GoldenHour has been in operation for 2 years servicing the San Fernando Valley area. They take pride in being a local business as Jalon is a Valley native. “I love that I get to operate my passion in this community. I even celebrate the Valley on “818 Day” which is on August 18th, as a means to commemorate our famous area code. We make it a community effort, and I’m proud of this town.”
GoldenHour is located at 14084 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA 91423 and accepts appointments via their booking site HERE

With every award show in L.A., there’s bound to be a plethora of events celebrating the socialites and celebs in town for the festivities. ESPY Week is no exception as the elite stars of sports are honored in their own way through an exciting ceremony that highlights these star athletes’ achievements.
Kicking off ESPY week, The Bespoke Men’s Club was hosted by current Super Bowl Champions of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod. Both Jenkins and McLeod brought their off the field passions into full effect as owners of their own individual fashion boutiques Damari Saville (Jenkins) and Back of House (McLeod) with their ESPY week pop-up event. After winning a Super Bowl together, the duo thought it would be great to partner for a successful collaboration, just off the field this time with The Bespoke Men’s Club!
The Bespoke experience consisted of a gifting suite in Downtown LA’s Fashion District on Monday, July 16th & Tuesday, July 17th. Bespoke was curated to provide the best in clothing, electronics, and grooming in one Men’s Club experience and the event was just that! I’m still on a very specific search for the best products and regimens relating to hair thinning/loss prevention. Within my own personal circles, I’ve come across other men my age struggling with the same concerns about hair loss, so I felt like I could find something of value in my search not only for myself, but for my peers and the thousands of people across America looking for a solution that works best for them.
Launching this Summer is SeroVital Hair Regeneres, a combination treatment of supplemental capsules through their Hair & Scalp Revitalizing Corrector and the topical Advanced Hair Thickening Serum comprising of SeroVital’s trademarked proprietary compound called Chromaviv. The two-step system features a dietary ingredient that delivers melanin to the hair roots and a topical serum that impacts the scalp environment with external bioactives. I’ll be undergoing a trial using this product to see just how much my personal hair thinning decreases. I’m personally very excited to see any results and share SeroVital Hair Regeneres with our readers as a solution.
This is a unisex product that also works on the reversal of graying hair. SeroVital Hair Regeneres will be available online in July retailing at $99 for a 30-day supply, with a full release to national retailers August 2018. Check out more at www.SeroVitalHair.com
Brunch in Los Angeles has turned into common play for Angelenos. Frankly, if you’re not brunching, then what are you doing at all on your early Sunday afternoons? It’s where we come together, enjoy particularly delicious food that crosses the boundaries of meal labels, and most importantly, gives us a good reason to drink one too many mimosas on a given period.
Though, I digress, I love to brunch, especially in L.A. There are so many options and in so many neighborhoods, you can almost never run out of ideas on where to eat. Every so often, I find a gem of a restaurant that leaves such a lasting impression on me, well, it deserves any audience I can bring to it.
Enter Commerson, a fairly new establishment near Miracle Mile whose menu options blew my mind and changed the game for my brunching standards. First off, the space is beautiful with a minimalist approach that incorporates concrete details, white walls, large glass windows, and light greenery. The space allows for the vibrant food to stand out as the stars of the room.
The heavy hitters on the menu, and my personal favorites, were the Tinga Sopes, Pork Belly Toast, Sourdough Waffles, French Toast, and the Salmon Benedict.
Even more impressive were Commerson’s mimosa options. Anyone can mix some champagne and orange juice together, but Commerson created two exquisitely crafted drinks in their Guava, Pear, & Sage mix and the Peach Thyme mimosa. I opted for the bottomless, so I made sure I was able to try both. Needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed in either.
Brunch is served at Commerson on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am – 3pm.
Regular Business hours are Tuesday – Thursday and Sunday from 5pm – 11pm, with Friday and Saturday from 5pm – Midnight.
Make sure to follow Commerson on Instagram at @CommersonLA and tag your experience.
Summer is well underway, and men, I’ve seen the glory as it pertains to products for retaining youthful, well-moisturized skin this season. Kiehl’s partnered with Equinox in Century City to provide a media preview to two of their latest products within their Facial Fuel & Body Fuel Lines.
- Eye Fuel – Due to its thin, fragile skin, the eye contour is often the first area of the face to show signs of
fatigue. Kiehl’s instantly cooling under-eye formula provides weightless hydration and refreshing
relief for tired-looking eyes. With continued use, the formula with Caffeine and Vitamin B3 helps
reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles. Fuel up after a long flight or a long night.
- Body Fuel Antiperspirant & Deodorant – Kiehl’s delivers on its first ever global roll-on antiperspirant deodorant and provides 48-hour protection against sweat and odor. The quick-dry formula with Caffeine, Vitamin C and Zinc glides on easily without sticking.
So far, I can attest that both product samples we received are holding up to the standard of Kiehls’ brand quality that they’ve maintained for years. To further that claim, both are the perfect additions to these lines as the rest of the Facial & Body Fuel collection is particularly pleasing, with my favorite items being the No-Shine Moisturizing Lip Balm, the Energizing Face Wash, and the Facial Fuel Energizing Moisture Treatment.
What Kiehl’s is doing is starting a movement with their products and you can follow it on social via their #FindYourFuel hashtag.
Additionally, make sure to check out our media preview’s supporting partners who treated us so well during the product introduction before and after our Athletic Conditioning session at Equinox Century City.
Shirts by lululemon; athletic socks by Bombas; water bottles by Takeya; catering by SweetGreen; iced coffee by La Colombe; beverages from Beaming & Dirty Lemon, and health bars by Nutshell.
Make sure to follow Kiehl’s on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat, and YouTube, and shop the whole collection HERE.

With cannabis now legal in Southern California, there’s no question the industry is booming and a new wave off entrepreneurs are emerging. We sat down with “cannapreneur” Sarah McDaniel to discuss her CBD- based skincare line Walagoot, which was born from from her own struggle with clear skin as a working model and actor. We also spoke to her about her upcoming on camera roles and stop animation projects she is producing. Check out the full Q&A below!
Q: You’re a California local, correct? Tell us how you got your start in modeling and acting.
A: Yes, I was born in Northern California then lived in San Diego and Calabasas and now near Oxnard. I actually got discovered as model through Instagram. When I was seventeen, I began posting modeling type shots to Instagram and this was before “influencers” was really a big thing yet. I started to build a following and caught the attention of photographer and videographer
I’ve always had a passion for filmmaking and recently acted in a psychological thriller, Perfect, alongside Abbie Cornish and Leonardo Nam which premiered at the 2018 SXSW Festival in Austin, TX. The film will also be premiering here in Los Angeles this fall.
Q: California is among the first states to legalize marijuana. The cannabis industry has since taken off. Tell us about your interest in Cannabis and your upcoming skincare line.
A: Growing up, I used to struggle with acne and eczema. It just makes you feel so conscious of your skin. Worrying if people notice I would even lose modeling and acne jobs because of my skin and it took a lot of my confidence away. After trying Accutane, over-the-counter medication and every fad on the market with no results, I knew there had to be something else. At the time, I was aware of cannabis recreationally and knew it had some medical applications. I began doing research and eventually contacted a friend in Colorado who recommended isolate which is CBD in a crystal form. It had some positive affects but I wanted something stronger so I began experimenting with the full spectrum of CBD oils along with coconut, jojoba and other oils. Eventually I found the right blend and my skincare line, Walagoot, was born!
Q: What has been the biggest challenges you face in your business so far?
A: I’m a young female in the cannabis and entertainment industry which brings a unique set of challenges. To be able to pose in lingerie or act in a horror film while also having a huge passion for behind the scenes business and creating its hard to command authority in two polar opposite worlds. A lot of what you say gets overlooked and its hard to be heard but theres always a way to find sucess if you’re committed enough.
Q: You also work behind the camera as a content creator. Tell us about your latest projects.
A: I’ve recently been working in stop-motion animation. I created a rabbit character known as “The Professor” which was produced in partnership with Movie Mountain Studios. We are now working on a cyclops character for our next short. I was originally considering creating the cyclops for a comic book but I’ve found through my work as an influencer that people engage better with video content. Stop motion is a very expensive and time consuming way to make a film but I really love it and hope to continue working in this medium.
I also put out a variety of video and photography content on my Instagram. You can follow me @krotchy.
Q: And what are your long-term goals with your cannabis line?
A: For my CBD line, I’d eventually like to expand from topicals to more medicinal tinctures for things like bone density, migraines, and eventually herbal chemo. I’d really like to use my knowledge of CBD oil to help people medically, and work toward creating cancer preventatives.
Q: Please share with us your SoCal Must Haves
Fav Restaurant: FACE restaurant is the best in Ojai
Fav Spot to Create Content: Favorite place to create content is in my bathtub
Fav Area of this City: Favorite area of the city is my friends house in Malibu canyon
