Social Media is at a point of evolution where the current heavy hitters are creating new and innovative ways to experience their platforms. When you take the premise of social media and flip its purpose to create initiatives that can drive socially positive impact around the world, you have Duuple. App developer and Entrepreneur, Abby Frimpong, wanted to change the game on how society uses social media by not only making it a fun user experience, but designing the app’s use to drive socially conscious movements for its users. Abby spoke with us to dive into Duuple’s purpose and why she was inspired to create this wonderful app.
Tell us about yourself and why you decided to create Duuple.
Duuple was first designed and later launched in 2018 to encourage change in the world. Personally, Duuple has a special place in my heart. Having worked as a fundraiser in the nonprofit world, I consistently saw the gap between the haves and the have- nots. There was always another brilliant kid in need of a scholarship, another cancer patient to get to or another deadly accident caused by a forgotten landmine. Duuple to me was a way to bridge the gap- how can we give back, how can we empower people to leave a mark and to inspire change in a fun and meaningful way! At the heart of Duuple are millions of people who are looking to make a difference in the world around them, inspiring community action for users to participate in exciting challenges, donate to causes and advocate for issues that matter.
What is one piece of advice you have for others wanting to take the entrepreneurial leap in Los Angeles?
My one piece of advice is “Do it and do your best.” You have nothing to lose. Worse comes to worst, you are where you are now, which is not bad. You will always have a job. Someone will hire you. The last thing you want is years from now that you regret you didn’t try.
Do you have any local Los Angeles or Southern Calfornia spots that inspire you?
Local Spots I find inspiring are The Getty Museum and Villa, Griffith Observatory but also just catching a sunset on any given day. California has many awe-inspiring spots.
How does Duuple work?
It’s simple. First, take a photo or video, upload it to the Duuple app and select the duration of the challenge. Next, decide the giveaway which could be a badge, prize or cash. Save the challenge and share it with your network and the Duuple community.
Want your friends to try to repeat that crazy tongue twister that only you think you can do? Challenge them on Duuple!
If you work with a brand or NGO that’s looking to connect with consumers on driving awareness to a new cause or new product? Create a challenge on Duuple.
New artists with a fun new way to debut their music? Create a challenge on Duuple.
These user-created challenges provide discoverability and virality –with immediate calls-to-action for fun and/or social good among friends. Whether it is just friends competing amongst each other or a charity raising funds, Duuple is a fun and interactive way to challenge your network and share hilarious and engaging content.
Anyone can launch a challenge with the charities we partner with. We have over 400 charities currently working with Duuple.
What do you see Duuple tackling next?
Now that we have Duuple active as one of the most entertaining mobile apps being used in the US and Korea, we would like to introduce it to the rest of the world. We have the Duuple Ambassadors program coming up which will allow Duuple to create its’ own influencers. Also, we have the Augmented Reality feature which is almost ready to be released which will take Duuple’s engagement to the next level. There is a lot happening for me and Duuple. I am constantly traveling to new countries to inspire the adoption of Duuple overseas. I will continue leading Duuple to become one of the most successful apps in its genre. Duuple will continue spearheading social good through social media.
Anything else you want our audience to know about Duuple?
When people come together, change happens and social media is a powerful tool for this to happen. If you’re reading this I’d like to challenge you to sign up for Duuple and use social media to help create that change in the world.
Duuple is available in the Apple Store HERE, and is available on Google Play HERE

The LA Conservation Corps (the Corps) announces the launch of Westbrook/Brownstein Green Tech Program (WBGT), an initiative steered by a partnership between L.A. native and NBA superstar Russell Westbrook’s Why Not? Foundation and L.A. philanthropist Chad Brownstein.
The program will provide digital job skills to at-risk young adults in the Corps and break down the digital divide by providing skill training for green tech job opportunities to 500 Corpsmembers in Los Angeles.
The Westbrook/Brownstein Green Tech Program will expose Corps members to achievable career paths and provide technology related tools and education. The program will include classes that train students in computer literacy and introduce marketable skills like coding, drone piloting, and computer engineering. The partnership will also fund the second pillar, the Westbrook/Brownstein Green Futures Lab, where new computers and necessary equipment for intro classes will be installed. The third core initiative is the advanced drone piloting career path program. It will be the creation of a quarterly advanced training program designed to position students to enter the game-changing career path of drone maintenance and piloting.
“It means a lot to me to partner with Chad and the LA Conversation Corps on this new project. As a kid who grew up here in L.A., I know how important it is to feel supported and empowered by the community. By helping to provide these resources, my hope is that the youth will be able to see how bright their future can be and expand the vision of what they think they’re capable of” said Westbrook.
An initial donation will be facilitated by Russell Westbrook’s Why Not? Foundation and Chad Brownstein; with their robust network and partners, they will continue to fund raise for additional programming.
“It’s an honor to work with Russell who has a track record of benefiting at risk youth. This partnership is a wonderful opportunity to positively contribute to a city we love” said Brownstein.
“The Corps family is so grateful for and energized by Russell and Chad’s commitment to our Corps members” shared Wendy Butts, CEO of the L.A. Conservation Corps. “For over 30 years, the Corps has championed the belief that building a young person’s confidence in themselves and opening their eyes to their educational and career possibilities can change their world. By investing in the technical skills needed to pursue careers in the growing green sector, Russell and Chad are helping Corpsmembers change everyone’s world.”

Russell Westbrook, a UCLA alumnus and Los Angeles native has always been passionate about empowering children in under-served communities. The mission of the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation is to inspire the lives of children, empower them to ask, “Why Not?” and teach them to never give up. The foundation works to help children that are facing hardships of any kind, and when faced with that adversity, fight to succeed and to never give up. Russell Westbrook and his brother were taught to ask, “Why Not?” every time they were told they could not do something. It is this encouragement and strength that Russell and his family want to spread to children across the country. Founded in 2012, the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation is dedicated to supporting community-based education and family service programs while encouraging youth to believe in themselves.
Chad Brownstein has been a leader in LA philanthropic endeavors for two decades, including being an initial member of the 2028 LA Olympic Committee. Brownstein has an established relationship with the Corps, as he previously served on its board as finance committee chair. He has also been involved in positively affecting the lives of over 1,000,000 at-risk youth in under-served areas of Los Angeles.
The launch of the Westbrook/Brownstein Green Tech Program took place Monday, August 19, 2019 at 9:30 AM at the LA Conservation Corps’ John Van de Kamp Center, with both Westbrook and Brownstein participating in a tour of the facilities.
Earlier this Summer, Sunset Boulevard destination staple, The Mondrian L.A., unveiled it’s complete redesign after a whopping 19 million dollar renovation. The level of luxury exuding from this West Hollywood location fits in perfectly with the beautiful days of an L.A. Summer. There’s a unique direction in design specific to the 236 rooms and hallways of the hotel bring in an essence of imagination through the Alice in Wonderland inspired decor. Take into account the floor-to-ceiling windows, marble touched bathrooms, and 24 Hour room service.
The renovation came in at a whopping 19 million dollars to create the ever-inspiring luxury hotel’s re-imagined aesthetic. It’s the perfect place for a local getaway while being able to also step outside and enjoy California-inspired cuisines at Ivory on Sunset and play at Skybar’s iconic sun-drenched pool deck by day, star-studded nightlife hotspot after sunset.
The House of Rémy Martin has introduced its new, limited-edition Rémy Martin XO created in collaboration with artist Steaven Richard, a globally celebrated French metal smith who has worked with major figures in contemporary art and architecture, such as Jacques Garcia, Pierre Yovanovitch, Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Nouvel.
The partnership highlights two living heritage companies rooted in historical craftmanship, refined luxury and celebrated expertise. Both the House of Rémy Martin and Atelier Steaven Richard bear the label Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV), a mark of recognition by the French State, a reward for artisanal know-how and manufacturing excellence.
Rémy Martin’s desire was to combine the world of cognac with the world of an extraordinary artist. During the collaboration process, Steaven Richard immersed himself in the story behind Rémy Martin and found inspiration from the vineyards in Cognac to create the refined design. The limited-edition XO label is made of an invented way to emboss brass with a unique golden texture featuring the Rémy Martin XO motif. The textured pattern is inspired by the diversity of the different eaux-de-vie necessary to create the XO blend.
“I took inspiration from Rémy Martin’s centuries-old connection with the soil – its love for nature – and something happened. Something approaching a revelation: from the verticality of the vines that climb to the sky, this piece reaches out towards the stars,” explains Richard.
Designing the label was a starting point which led to an extension of the collaboration. Steaven Richard also created a metal sculpture, the Masterpiece, for the iconic Cognac house. The art piece is a unique architectural sculpture, which gently reveals Rémy Martin’s emblematic centaur in the “anamorphosis” optical illusion technique, glimpsed through metal pillars that represent the vertical vines of Cognac, France.
To celebrate the launch, Rémy Martin and Richard hosted an exclusive event in the Eric Buterbaugh Gallery in West Hollywood. The interactive event created the sensory experience of being inside Steaven Richard’s atelier. Notable attendees included Artist Russel Young, Actor Sarunas Jackson of Insecure, Jeweler Zenobia Morrow, Actor EP Evans of Ballers, Actor/Comedian Cherelle Patrice, former WNBA All Star, Cappie Pondexter, amongst others.
The limited-edition Rémy Martin XO is available in limited quantities through independent retailers in select markets and online at Reserve Bar for $200.

The Factory Kitchen is launching their new summer wine Monday special running Monday, September 30th, 2019. Guests can enjoy 50% off any bottle of wine from their extensive wine list. The weekly special is available every Monday during both the lunch and dinner business hours. Beverage Director and Sommelier Francine Diamond-Ferdinandi has created a wine list which reflects the essence of their distinctive regions. Though Italian wines are prevalent at The Factory Kitchen, additional wines from neighboring Western European countries and beyond are served.
The Factory Kitchen is the product of a long-standing friendship between Ferdinandi and Chef Angelo Auriana. Ferdinandi and Auriana share the vision of imparting their Italian roots and memories through food and hospitality. The original trattoria, serving traditional Italian recipes, opened its doors on Oct. 24, 2013, in The Arts District, Downtown Los Angeles. The Factory Kitchen takes its name from the street it’s located on and the former factory building complex that hosts it, but the restaurant is purely Italian.
The food at The Factory Kitchen takes center stage, with a lively pasta-making station where pastas including Casonzei, pork sausage and veal ravioli with pork belly, sage brown butter and Reggiano Parmigiano cheese and Modenesi, 18-month aged Prosciutto di Parma tortellini. Filling the length of the back of the restaurant, the pasta station is also where The Factory Kitchen’s signature Mandilli di Seta is made—thin sheets of handkerchief egg pasta with Ligurian almond basil pesto, a favorite at the restaurant’s flagship location in Downtown Los Angeles.
The Factory Kitchen Los Angeles is located at 1300 Factory Place #101 in Los Angeles, CA 90013.
The restaurant serves lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Dinner services on Monday through Thursday from 5:30 pm to 10 pm, Friday from 5:30 pm to 11 pm, Saturday from 5 pm to 11 pm and Sunday from 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

The official start of the solstice was less than a week ago and the term summer is more than just a season these days! It’s also used as a synonym to describe a mood. A good playlist can make those longer days and shorter nights seem like moments of bliss, and one of the songs that should be added to the soundtrack of 2019 is rising country/pop crossover songstress Julia Rizik’s newest single, Love Myself.
It immediately draws you in with a heavy downbeat and sultry vocals from the young maven that hails from the state of Arizona and now resides in Los Angeles. Rizik wrote the song to appeal across the board for all genders, races, and religions and it’s about empowerment and accepting the skin you are in. The catchy hook will have you busting out impromptu concerts whether you are riding down the coast with the top down in a car full of friends or a solo concert in the shower trying to avoid soap from getting into your eyes!
“My songwriting is inspired by all sorts of things. I play both guitar and piano and mostly write songs about experiences that I am going through in my personal life. I was bullied a lot and music was the one thing that got me through.I want listeners to know that this music comes from a really personal space, and I hope that they relate to it and connect with it as much as I do,” shared Rizik.
While this is her first pop single, Julia Rizik is no stranger to the world of music. She has appeared on the festival circuit at such events as Country Thunder and Stagecoach in the last year. Her first independent country single “Medicine” (2017) which she co-wrote and co-produced got noticed by Spotify and made their New Music Nashville Playlist. Country music is where she got her start, but she is ready to trade in her boots for stilettos and kick the door of popular music in.
“I transitioned into pop music very organically. It was not a forced transition at all. I started producing my own music about six to seven months ago, and the sounds I wanted to hear when I was creating these tracks were pop. On my new song, Love Myself, my fans can expect a lot more confidence and security in my lyrics. I have written a lot of songs about heartbreak, but on this track, I wanted to send listeners a message of hope and self-love,” shared Rizik, who plans to release a full pop EP of the same name later this Summer.
If those tracks are anything like Love Myself, than we can’t wait to fall in love with this new pop princess on the rise.

If there’s something to be said about Christian Cowan, it’s that he’s as innovative as he is fun. We’re talking about a designer who’s dressed the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, and so many more, marking him as a prominent creative in the fashion industry. Amidst his well-deserved success, Cowan chose to celebrate women on International Women’s Day with a thoroughly captivating runway experience in Downtown L.A. at the City Market Social House showcasing his “Powerpuff Girls” inspired capsule collection.
The partnership came directly from Cartoon Network, the very network that first aired “The Powerpuff Girls” in 1998. In a continued celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary, Cartoon Network saw it fit to align itself with Christian Cowan to develop a collection that not only celebrates a pop culture phenomenon like “The Powerpuff Girls,” but also furthers the notion that women and girls can be powerful at any age.
“The Powerpuff Girls have always been part of a broader pop cultural celebration around ‘girl power,’ said Jill King SVP, Marketing and Partnerships, Cartoon Network and Boomerang. “Christian’s take on the many complex aspects of femininity, along with his originality and fearlessness as a creator, makes this a perfect collaboration to bring the message of empowering girls and women of all ages to life.”
The collaboration between Cowan and The Powerpuff Girls will also benefit and support She’s the First (STF), as a means to further promote the nonprofit’s mission to fight gender inequality through education. STF believes that a girl with an education is unstoppable!
“I am thrilled to be partnering with such an iconic brand whose message is about supporting one another and kicking butt no matter your age, size or gender,” says Cowan. “I grew up watching The Powerpuff Girls, and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to create a collection inspired by characters that advocate for sisterhood and positivity.”
SoCal Mag was all for the nostalgia and appreciated Cowan’s attention to detail through design from the show’s inspiration. Hues of the iconic blue, green, and pink donned by the Powerpuff Girls’ uniform were seen throughout the collection with additional nods to other notable characters from the show like Miss Sara Bellum and the Girls’ arch nemesis, Mojo Jojo.
Celebrities in attendance included: Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum, Erika Jayne, Tinashe, Amanda Steele, Kollin Carter, Carly Rae Jepsen, Monique Coleman, Betty Who, Skai Jackson, Kim Petras, Draya Michelle, Shaun Ross, Julissa Bermudez, Francia Raisa, EJ King, Gia Gunn, Max Emerson, Marta Pozzan, Megan Pormer, Patrick Starrr, Christa Allen, Madison Grace, Niia Bertino, Ginta Bertino, Nikita Dragun, Jazzmyne Roberts, Khrystyana Kazakova, and Lindsay Webster.
