Summer is in full swing and Sunset Blvd staple, KATANA, has an offering that feeds the palette of Angelenos looking for a unique dining experience this season. KATANA’s Red Sun is an annual event inspired by the Ginza tradition in Japan. It takes place every Sunday from 6:00pm – 11:30pm now until Labor Day Weekend, September 1, 2019.
SoCal Mag was able to get a preview of the limited edition menu along with the excellent Summer cocktails crafted by KATANA’s mixologists.
Enjoy items like the Popcorn Shrimp Tacos topped with a miso glaze, purple cabbage, and served in organic blue tortillas; The delicious Seafood Ceviche is made with shrimp, crab, yuzu, avocado, tomato, cilantro, and ghost pepper salt; The Hammer Roll is made with rock shrimp tempura, avocado, soy paper, spicy tuna, soy marinated jalapeno, masago, and eel sauce; My personal favorite was the Wagyu Short Ribs, served sizzling; and we can’t forget about the Smoked Robata Shrimp made with chimichurri ponzu and the Kurobuta Asian BBQ Ribs.
The star cocktails from the bar include the Tropic Like It’s Hot, a sweet blend of rum, Giffards apricot liquor, pineapple juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters. The Dragon Kiss is made with Azunia Resposado tequila, asian plum syrup, lime juice, rhubarb bitters, and aromatic tonic. Lastly, the Summer Snow is a tread made with vodka, matcha syrup, coconut milk, passion fruit, and lime juice.

The Factory Kitchen is launching their new summer wine Monday special running Monday, September 30th, 2019. Guests can enjoy 50% off any bottle of wine from their extensive wine list. The weekly special is available every Monday during both the lunch and dinner business hours. Beverage Director and Sommelier Francine Diamond-Ferdinandi has created a wine list which reflects the essence of their distinctive regions. Though Italian wines are prevalent at The Factory Kitchen, additional wines from neighboring Western European countries and beyond are served.
The Factory Kitchen is the product of a long-standing friendship between Ferdinandi and Chef Angelo Auriana. Ferdinandi and Auriana share the vision of imparting their Italian roots and memories through food and hospitality. The original trattoria, serving traditional Italian recipes, opened its doors on Oct. 24, 2013, in The Arts District, Downtown Los Angeles. The Factory Kitchen takes its name from the street it’s located on and the former factory building complex that hosts it, but the restaurant is purely Italian.
The food at The Factory Kitchen takes center stage, with a lively pasta-making station where pastas including Casonzei, pork sausage and veal ravioli with pork belly, sage brown butter and Reggiano Parmigiano cheese and Modenesi, 18-month aged Prosciutto di Parma tortellini. Filling the length of the back of the restaurant, the pasta station is also where The Factory Kitchen’s signature Mandilli di Seta is made—thin sheets of handkerchief egg pasta with Ligurian almond basil pesto, a favorite at the restaurant’s flagship location in Downtown Los Angeles.

The official start of the solstice was less than a week ago and the term summer is more than just a season these days! It’s also used as a synonym to describe a mood. A good playlist can make those longer days and shorter nights seem like moments of bliss, and one of the songs that should be added to the soundtrack of 2019 is rising country/pop crossover songstress Julia Rizik’s newest single, Love Myself.
It immediately draws you in with a heavy downbeat and sultry vocals from the young maven that hails from the state of Arizona and now resides in Los Angeles. Rizik wrote the song to appeal across the board for all genders, races, and religions and it’s about empowerment and accepting the skin you are in. The catchy hook will have you busting out impromptu concerts whether you are riding down the coast with the top down in a car full of friends or a solo concert in the shower trying to avoid soap from getting into your eyes!
“My songwriting is inspired by all sorts of things. I play both guitar and piano and mostly write songs about experiences that I am going through in my personal life. I was bullied a lot and music was the one thing that got me through.I want listeners to know that this music comes from a really personal space, and I hope that they relate to it and connect with it as much as I do,” shared Rizik.
While this is her first pop single, Julia Rizik is no stranger to the world of music. She has appeared on the festival circuit at such events as Country Thunder and Stagecoach in the last year. Her first independent country single “Medicine” (2017) which she co-wrote and co-produced got noticed by Spotify and made their New Music Nashville Playlist. Country music is where she got her start, but she is ready to trade in her boots for stilettos and kick the door of popular music in.
“I transitioned into pop music very organically. It was not a forced transition at all. I started producing my own music about six to seven months ago, and the sounds I wanted to hear when I was creating these tracks were pop. On my new song, Love Myself, my fans can expect a lot more confidence and security in my lyrics. I have written a lot of songs about heartbreak, but on this track, I wanted to send listeners a message of hope and self-love,” shared Rizik, who plans to release a full pop EP of the same name later this Summer.
If those tracks are anything like Love Myself, than we can’t wait to fall in love with this new pop princess on the rise.

The second season of YouTube RED’s critically acclaimed series, “Step Up: High Water” has officially launched and the cast gathered for a private screening event to kick off the newest serving of episodes. Actor, Terrence Green, who plays “Rigo” on the show partnered with streetwear brand, Popular Demand, to host the screening at their screen room facility in Burbank, CA.

If there’s something to be said about Christian Cowan, it’s that he’s as innovative as he is fun. We’re talking about a designer who’s dressed the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, and so many more, marking him as a prominent creative in the fashion industry. Amidst his well-deserved success, Cowan chose to celebrate women on International Women’s Day with a thoroughly captivating runway experience in Downtown L.A. at the City Market Social House showcasing his “Powerpuff Girls” inspired capsule collection.
The partnership came directly from Cartoon Network, the very network that first aired “The Powerpuff Girls” in 1998. In a continued celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary, Cartoon Network saw it fit to align itself with Christian Cowan to develop a collection that not only celebrates a pop culture phenomenon like “The Powerpuff Girls,” but also furthers the notion that women and girls can be powerful at any age.
“The Powerpuff Girls have always been part of a broader pop cultural celebration around ‘girl power,’ said Jill King SVP, Marketing and Partnerships, Cartoon Network and Boomerang. “Christian’s take on the many complex aspects of femininity, along with his originality and fearlessness as a creator, makes this a perfect collaboration to bring the message of empowering girls and women of all ages to life.”

There is a reason why Spice Affair in Beverly Hills dons its name, and that’s because this fine Indian restaurant has cleverly paired the most traditional Indian dishes & spices with some of the finest renditions of California cuisine. It’s no wonder why Spice Affair is an award winning business and holds the title of “Best Indian Food in Los Angeles”.
I partook in a divine dinner experience at Spice Affair and knew that this restaurant really had something competitive to offer in its Beverly Hills dining neighborhood. For starters, their famed “Butter Chicken Loaded with Love” stands up to its name as one of the most ordered items on the menu. The Dum Chicken Biryani is another highly recommended favorite which served to be a delicious medley of Basmati rice, with boneless chicken, and Saffron. I was blown away by all of the flavors throughout each dish. Quite frankly, Spice Affair, created a dining experience that expanded my personal palate and opened my mind to a new world of food options.
Even more impressive were the numerous options for Vegan and Gluten Free items on the menu. My guest that evening lives by a dominantly plant-based diet, so it was great that they were able to comfortably order from the menu without having to feel limited with items to choose from and still enjoy some of the best options from the restaurant.
I highly recommend eating “family style” here because you’re going to want to try a little bit of everything. It makes the dining experience so much better and allows for a completely satisfactory meal with layers of flavor and Spice!
Streetwear as a whole resonates so easily with the city of Los Angeles, so much that it’s a staple part of L.A. culture. Streetwear loves L.A., and L.A. loves streetwear, so it’s no mystery as to why this city is a booming hub of creative brands and designers tapping into the category that has skyrocketed to mainstream fashion. Los Angeles is saturated with streetwear brands, but few create with the position of a reaching out to a greater cause. The young founders of WHERE thought about what it means to be a streetwear brand and really wanted to reflect a celebration of this amazing city through their clothing. They even took it further to expand the brand’s platform in a positive direction by partnering with the Time’s Up Organization and Legal Fund to combat sexual assault and inequality. What separates WHERE Clothing from other streetwear brands?
Something that we always notice with other streetwear brands is this nonchalant sense of coolness. You can see it in the model’s expressions and body language. Then, you add the intimidating nature of both influence and luxury and these brands are almost so ‘cool’ that they’re untouchable. We want to redefine that. We want to align “cool” with excitement and warmth and the sincerity that comes with those feelings. When we take photos, we make sure most of them are candid. We want everyone smiling.
The Times Up movement is making some serious waves in today’s social climate. What compelled you to contribute to this initiative via your clothing brand?
This is important to us for so many reasons. The work that the Time’s Up Organization and Legal Fund is doing to end sexual assault, harassment and inequality is imperative. Their platform is massive, and it’s so important to support their ability to fund legal representation for the victims of these crimes.
Natasha: As a woman, specifically in the entertainment business, I am appalled by the way various powerful figures have taken advantage of their position by asserting themselves over so many, a majority being (but not limited to) women. In addition, there is a discrepancy in women’s pay, authority in the work place and our opportunities, benefits and representation. As a woman who has been given the privilege of an education, I think it’s only right to use my own, smaller platform to promote causes like Time’s Up. I am excited by and grateful for their work towards creating a safer and more honorable community.
What message do you want WHERE Clothing to give its fans?
Celebration. We want ours to transfer. We love what these clothes represent, and we want our customers to join us in celebrating when they buy something— whether it be Los Angeles artisanship, a special graphic, or the Time’s Up Legal Fund.
What can we expect from the brand in future collections?
This is just the beginning for us and we can’t wait to keep going. We will continue to perfect our fit and feel while bringing new ideas and inspirations to the table. We have so many designs ready and we’re so excited to share— from more creative capsules like REPOSE, to new city specific collections like our New York Series set to launch next year. Additionally, we are working on some collaborations and partnerships with other brands that uphold similar values and aesthetics. With every collection, we learn so much. It’s so fun for us to take that knowledge and invest it into our future.
For National Men’s Grooming Day, it was important to me that I find a grooming service worthy of publication. It had to be memorable, it had to be satisfying, it had to be “Golden”. I also threw in a convenience factor as I wanted to be sure it was in the San Fernando Valley being that I reside in North Hollywood. Thankfully, I didn’t have to travel too far as I was directed over to GoldenHour in Sherman Oaks. Owned and operated by young entrepreneur, Jalon Webster, GoldenHour takes pride in being the Valley’s best men’s grooming experience available because they hold themselves up to the highest standards in town.
The vibe of GoldenHour is established as soon as you walk into the shop from the minimalist design with street art accents along with a music playlist that sets the mood to unwind. Jalon says, “We like to take you away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world and bring you to a place of serenity within the shop. We utilize curated playlists to set the tone with music. Then pairing our full service haircuts with our men’s manicures, pedicures, or facials allows for an experience that is truly ‘Golden’. I received a fresh haircut from Jalon himself and a professional manicure from the on-site aesthetician and nail tech. The signature haircut also called “The Golden Hour” takes a complete 60 minutes because Jalon focuses on precision and giving his clients the best treatment available. He attributes his skill to the time he’s spent cutting hair altogether. “I’ve been cutting hair for over 14 years, which is more than half of my life. I love what I do and I love interacting with people. There’s something very therapeutic about getting a great haircut, and I want to stick to the old school idea that I’m not just your barber, but I’m also a type of therapist when you’re in my chair.“

August 3rd is officially deemed National Watermelon Day, and it just so happens to be my personal favorite fruit of all time. I’ve legitimately been anticipating this day all year long, and now that it’s here, I just can’t contain myself. 8. Courtesy of Minibar Delivery, here are two delicious watermelon cocktail recipes for any party.
Watermelon Margarita: 2 oz tequila; ½ oz lime juice; 2 oz fresh watermelon juice; 1 oz cointreau; Watermelon balls to garnish.
Combine all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled and pour into glass. Garnish with Watermelon balls and enjoy.
Frozen Watermelon Cucumber Cooler: ½ a watermelon cubed; Cucumber slices; 2 oz Vodka; 1 oz triple sec; 1 oz lime juice; Ice.
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until well combined. Pour into glass and garnish with watermelon slices.

Tennis icon Maria Sharapova and sbe CEO and Founder Sam Nazarian celebrated the global partnership with Maria Sharapova’s Sugarpova confectionery line and sbe, at Cleo Mediterráneo, one of sbe’s international award winning restaurant brands. Brandi Cyrus arrived with gal pals to support Maria and was seen enjoying her sweet treats. Sam and Maria chatted over her confections sharing stories while James Kennedy had a laugh with friends.
