The Artist Tree’s new Cannabis Lounge in Hawthorne just opened up, and let me tell you, this place is it. From the moment I stepped in, it felt like a modern, local version of their West Hollywood spot, but with a vibe that feels more… homegrown. It’s somewhere you’d want to meet friends, hang out, and really enjoy the space.
First off, the service? Top tier. You know when you walk into a place and the staff just makes you feel like a VIP? Yeah, that’s the energy here. You start by checking in at the dispensary, they then walk you through to the lounge. The bar room and seating area was just right; open, welcoming, and comfortable, with great hospitality all around. They even had water service at all times, so you never had to worry about staying hydrated while you enjoy their wide range of cannabis products (seriously, there’s something for everyone here).

The product selection was extensive. Whether you’re into flower, edibles, or something in between, they’ve got you covered. They also have different devices you can rent to enjoy your high! The Stündenglass gravity bong was a highlight for me.
And the drinks? Amazing. The Agua Fresca and To the Moon infused cocktails were a hit!
One thing I love about this spot is that you can rent it out for events. So whether it’s a birthday, a chill night with friends, or something bigger, the space has you covered!
Overall, The Artist Tree in Hawthorne isn’t just another lounge—it’s a safe space. Between the stellar service, dope products, and great atmosphere, it’s definitely somewhere I’ll be bringing my friends to. If you haven’t checked it out yet, make it happen. You won’t regret it.

Obesity is a growing public health concern across the United States, with the state of California being no exception. According to a GlobalData report, obesity can have profound economic implications in California, with the reduction in the economy amounting to $89.5 billion or about 2.5% of the state’s gross domestic product. Since obesity is a progressive condition that can decrease the quality of life and increase the risk of other chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, these economic costs mainly come from healthcare expenses and workforce productivity losses. For instance, there are 353,600 fewer adults in the workforce due to obesity-related unemployment and preventable deaths. Employers also spend $6.3 billion more on weight-related absenteeism and disability among overweight or obese employees. Considering the staggering costs of obesity on health and quality of life, obesity prevention, and management interventions must become accessible among Californians. Weight loss drugs emerge as an increasingly available option for overweight and obese residents, demanding a closer look at how they work and what patients must consider before taking them.
How weight loss drugs work
In a previous article from the ongoing Ask the Experts series, primary care physician Dr. David Nazarian explains that a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists is now being used for weight loss. Although GLP-1 agonists were originally used to treat type 2 diabetes, they can also be prescribed for chronic weight loss and management.
GLP-1 agonists mimic the brain receptors and gut hormones responsible for satiety and appetite control. By binding to GLP-1 receptors, these medications can curb hunger and slow down stomach emptying, thus preventing overeating and promoting weight loss.
Weekly injectables that aid weight loss
Weight loss drugs typically come in the form of weekly injectables, which means they are liquid medications administered with a needle and syringe. Among the GLP-1 agonists available to Californians enrolled in the Medicaid program is the liraglutide Saxenda, which may be used by adults with obesity or adults who are overweight and have a weight-related complication like diabetes or hypertension.
Likewise, Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for heart health and chronic weight management. After a House Bill was passed this year, California is now among the states whose Medicaid program covers Wegovy as weight loss drugs with added health benefits, such as improved blood sugar levels.
Another increasingly accessible GLP-1 agonist is Ozempic, which is also a semaglutide like Wegovy and can lower blood sugar and reduce appetite. However, since Ozempic is only approved by the FDA for type 2 diabetes, there have been concerns about its side effects on overweight or obese individuals.
Side effects of weight loss drugs
One of the most visible side effects of taking Ozempic for weight loss is Ozempic butt, which is characterized by the loose, sagging appearance of the buttocks. This phenomenon can be attributed to how Ozempic induces rapid weight loss of about 5.9% after three months and 10.9% without six months.
Losing a significant amount of weight within a short period means the skin can barely adjust and becomes less elastic, leading to wrinkly, sagging, and even aging skin. Other side effects of Ozempic include headache, dizziness, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. In 2023, about 12% of reported overdose exposures to semaglutide were from California, which also highlights the need for medical supervision when using weight loss drugs.
Other weight loss approaches
While weight loss drugs can be effective, overweight or obese individuals can reduce the risk of their side effects by looking into other weight loss approaches. A notable example is bariatric surgery, which manages obesity and related conditions through medical procedures like the alteration of gut hormones, reduction of stomach size, and modification or bypass of the intestines.
A news article reports that 4.4% of the severely obese children in southern California qualify for pediatric bariatric surgery, with children’s hospitals Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, UCLA Health, and Stanford Children’s Health offering the procedure.
Beyond these medical approaches, healthy and sustainable weight loss can also be achieved through lifestyle modifications like a reduced-calorie diet and regular exercise.

As concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability grow, more people are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint in everyday activities. Laundry, a routine household task, offers several opportunities to make eco-friendly choices that benefit both your clothes and the planet. From using energy-efficient appliances to selecting eco-conscious detergents, there are numerous strategies to ensure your laundry routine is as green as possible. This article will guide you through the steps to achieve eco-friendly laundry without compromising on cleanliness or quality.
1. Choose Energy-Efficient Appliances
One of the most impactful ways to make your laundry routine eco-friendly is by using energy-efficient appliances. Traditional washing machines and dryers consume significant amounts of water and electricity, contributing to your household’s overall energy usage.
Energy Star Certified Machines: When shopping for a new washer or dryer, look for models with the Energy Star certification. These machines are designed to use less water and energy while still providing excellent cleaning power. Front-loading washers are typically more efficient than top-loading models, using up to 50% less water.
Cold Water Washing: Washing your clothes in cold water is a simple yet effective way to save energy. Heating water accounts for about 90% of the energy used by washing machines. Cold water is not only energy-efficient but also gentler on fabrics, helping to preserve colors and reduce wear and tear.
2. Use Eco-Friendly Detergents
The type of detergent you use plays a crucial role in both the cleanliness of your clothes and the health of the environment. Many conventional detergents contain harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and phosphates, which can harm aquatic life and contribute to water pollution.
Another effective way to ensure your laundry routine is eco-friendly is by utilizing professional laundry services in London. Many professional services have adopted sustainable practices, including the use of energy-efficient machines and environmentally friendly detergents. By outsourcing your laundry to a service that prioritizes green practices, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint without compromising on cleanliness or quality. These services often use less water and energy per load compared to standard home machines, and they are skilled in choosing the right settings and detergents for different fabrics, ensuring your clothes are well-cared for while also being kind to the planet.
Biodegradable and Plant-Based Detergents: Choose detergents that are biodegradable and made from plant-based ingredients. These detergents are free from harmful chemicals and are often just as effective as traditional ones. Look for products that are labeled as eco-friendly, biodegradable, or non-toxic.
DIY Detergents: For those who enjoy a DIY approach, making your own laundry detergent is a great way to control the ingredients you use. Simple recipes often include ingredients like baking soda, washing soda, and castile soap, which are gentle on both your clothes and the environment.
3. Opt for Natural Fabric Softeners
Fabric softeners and dryer sheets are common laundry additives that make clothes feel softer and smell fresher. However, they often contain chemicals that can be harmful to the environment and may irritate sensitive skin.
Vinegar and Baking Soda: A natural alternative to commercial fabric softeners is using white vinegar. Adding half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle can help soften clothes and reduce static cling. Baking soda is another eco-friendly option that can be added to the wash cycle to boost the cleaning power and keep clothes soft.
Wool Dryer Balls: Instead of using disposable dryer sheets, consider using wool dryer balls. These reusable balls help reduce drying time, soften clothes naturally, and decrease static without the need for chemical-laden products.
4. Practice Energy-Saving Drying Techniques
Drying clothes can be one of the most energy-intensive parts of the laundry process. Fortunately, there are several eco-friendly alternatives to using an electric dryer.
Air Drying: The most energy-efficient way to dry your clothes is by air drying them. Hang your clothes on a drying rack or clothesline either indoors or outdoors. Air drying not only saves energy but also helps extend the life of your clothes by reducing wear and tear from the dryer.
Low Heat Settings: If you need to use a dryer, opt for the lowest heat setting possible. High heat can damage fabrics and increase energy consumption. Also, make sure to clean the lint filter after each use to maintain your dryer’s efficiency and reduce the risk of fire.
5. Wash Full Loads
Washing full loads is another easy way to make your laundry routine more eco-friendly. Running a washing machine with only a few items wastes water and energy, as the machine uses nearly the same amount of both, regardless of the load size.
Maximize Each Load: Wait until you have a full load of laundry before running the machine. This maximizes the efficiency of your washing machine and reduces the number of loads you need to do each week.
Load Size Settings: If you must wash a smaller load, adjust the water level setting on your machine to match the size of the load. This simple adjustment can save a significant amount of water over time.
6. Choose Sustainable Fabrics
The type of fabrics you choose to buy and wear can also impact the sustainability of your laundry routine. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon shed microplastics when washed, which can end up in waterways and harm marine life.
Natural Fibers: Opt for clothing made from natural fibers such as organic cotton, linen, and wool. These materials are biodegradable, renewable, and tend to require less water and energy to produce.
Care for What You Have: The most sustainable option is to care for the clothes you already own. By following the above tips, you can extend the life of your garments, reducing the need to buy new ones frequently.
Conclusion
Eco-friendly laundry practices are not only beneficial for the environment but also for your clothes and your wallet. By making conscious choices—such as using energy-efficient appliances, eco-friendly detergents, and natural fabric softeners—you can significantly reduce your environmental impact while keeping your clothes clean and well-maintained. Implementing these small changes in your laundry routine is a simple yet powerful way to contribute to a healthier planet.

Ed Ruscha has consistently held up a mirror to American society by transforming some of its defining attributes—from consumer culture and popular entertainment to the ever-changing urban landscape—into the very subject of his art. In 1956, Ruscha left Oklahoma City to study commercial art in Los Angeles, where he drew inspiration from the city’s architectural landscape—parking lots, urban streets, and apartment buildings—and colloquial language.
As his first comprehensive, cross-media retrospective in over 20 years, ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN traces Ruscha’s methods and familiar subjects throughout his career and underscores the many remarkable contributions he has made well beyond the boundaries of the art world. The exhibition includes his early works produced while traveling through Europe, his installations—such as the Chocolate Room and the Course of Empire presented at the Venice Biennale in 1970 and 2005, respectively—and his ceaseless photographic documentation of the streets of Los Angeles beginning in 1965.

Through a collection of 89 poems, Seskin redefines the narrative of aging and offers readers a positive take on what is often perceived as a negative.
“Older, Wiser, Shorter” is an insightful collection of poetry; authentic, funny, quirky and heartfelt that acknowledge the physical vulnerabilities, emotional losses, and surprises people encounter in their senior years. Seskin pays tribute to the sense of power, resilience and new-found joys people discover as they acknowledge and accept their aging. Seskin’s talent for finding the universal connecting tissue of even our most intimate moments will resonate with readers seeking to discover new ways to honor the past, celebrate the present, and welcome the future.

Available for preorder: Release date: Aug 21st, 2024
“I sat down to read one poem last night and I ended up reading half the book. I feel as though I know you. You have definitely captured the experience of aging.” —Mary Pipher, author of Women Rowing North and My Life in Light
An Interview with Jane Seskin
- What inspired you to write about aging through poetry?
I’ve been poeming for more than 40 years. It’s a natural way for me to quickly put a feeling or experience on paper to think about, reflect and expand upon in the days that follow.
- What do you hope readers will take away from your collection of poetry?
I hope readers will identify with the stories I tell and know they’re not alone in this process of growing older. That all of us age differently. And to some degree we still have the choice to create a full rich life.
- What is the biggest challenge of navigating life trials, tribulations and vulnerabilities, especially when you begin to age? How can one be resilient to this challenge?
Vulnerability is shareable. When you tell another person of your feelings you make connections and that is the beginning of community. I’ve included Vows in this book that are affirmations to build on. When you affirm yourself, give yourself validation through the Vows, you build self-esteem and that is a pretty powerful feeling!
- What is the most important lesson that your self-discovery journey has taught you?
That I am okay. That life is different at different ages. I’ve learned I can adapt to change. That friendship is extraordinary and necessary.
- What does your poetry writing process look like? Where do you seek out inspiration for your poems?
I am alive and that is my inspiration. Days are both difficult and soaring with joy and I let myself be open to all. As a therapist I am acutely aware of people’s behavior, the landscape around me and what goes unsaid. I also am very curious and eager to hear the stories of others and create my own.

“Jane Seskin writes with keen insight and eyes open to the inadvertent miracles in our everyday life.” —Arthur Sze, author of Glass Constellation
